Colorado All State Choir Auditions 2019-2020

Please note: Only juniors and seniors are eligible to audition and there are

some additional costs/fees affiliated with this event; however RFHS can assist

with the costs in some cases.

Tuesday, September 10, 2019 -- FINAL Paperwork Registration Deadline!

Friday & Saturday - October 4-5, 2019 -- Western Division Auditions

                                                                 Held At Colorado Mesa University in GJ

November 2019 TBA -- Audition Results Announced

Thursday, Friday, Sat. Feb. 20-22 -- All-State Choir Festival 
February 2 - All State Choir Concert - Held at the BellCo Theatre, Denver, CO.

The Audition Components:

I. PREPARED SOLO: 50 Points
Original score for judge and live accompanist required. Jazz, Pop, and Musical Theatre songs are NOT permitted.

  • Tone Quality - 10 

  • Intonation - 10

  • Technique - 10

  • Diction - 10

  • Interpretation - 10

 

PRACTICE RESOURCES:

You should prepare this music with your private teacher or with Mrs. Kuhlman. This portion of the audition consist of 50% of your overall score. YOU are responsible for your own learning; no one can memorize your music except YOU! You will be provided resources to help you learn your music, but ultimately YOU must decide how much work you're willing to put into this learning! Don't give up :)

2. SENSE OF TONALITY/APPLIED SKILLS: 10 Points
Any method may be used: Solfegio, numbers, 'la', etc.., but at RFHS we use Solfeggio

  • Major Triad - 1

  • Minor Triad - 1

  • Diminished Triad - 1

  • Augmented Triad - 1

  • Major Scale - 2 

  • Harmonic Minor Scale - 2

  • Melodic Minor Scale - 2

3. INTERVALS: 10 Points
ATTENTION: Any sung/hummed note will be scored. YOU MAY NOT hum or sing to practice.

  • Sing requested interval from given pitch - 6 (3 intervals, 2 pts ea.) 

  • Identify interval between two pitches - 4 (2 intervals, 2 pts ea.)

4. MELODIC SIGHT READING: 20 Points
Any method may be used: Solfeggio, numbers, 'la', etc.., but at RFHS we use Solfeggio

  • Melodic Sight Reading - 2 examples, 10 pts ea.

5. RHYTHMIC SIGHT READING: 10 Points
Scoring occurs from what students say. Any method may be used: 'ta', 'da', etc.., but at RFHS we use the beat numbers - i.e. - one, two and, three-e-and-a, four... 

  • Rhythmic Sight Reading - 10 (1 example, 10 pts)

FINAL SCORE:
Each student will receive a RAW SCORE out of 100 possible points. That score will then be calculated into a "Z-Score" to account for the different judges, their averages, and the amount of students that are needed for each choir. The "Z-Score" cut off is different for each voice part, and will change every year.
