Mrs. Marcia Kuhlman, MM

Choral & Drama Director

Mrs. Marcia Kuhlman’s professional work as a conductor and teacher spans a wide variety of ages and abilities including experiences with high school, collegiate, and adult choirs.  Mrs. Kuhlman holds a Bachelor of Music in Choral Music Education from Oakland University in Rochester Hills, Michigan.  She attended on full scholarship to pursue a double major in Bassoon Performance and Choral Music Education. She studied under Dr. Michael Mitchell and graduated magna cum laude with honors from the academically elite Oakland University  Honors College in May 2006.

In August 2006 Mrs. Kuhlman was appointed as director of the choral and drama departments for Eaton Rapids High School in Eaton Rapids, Michigan.  For three years under her direction, the students participated in activities including performances at the prestigious Wharton Center with Three Men And A Tenor, Michigan School Vocal Music Association’s Choral Festivals and Solo & Ensemble events yielding superior ratings with choirs, ensembles, and soloists, as well as ensemble selection as a finalist for the Michigan Youth Arts Festival.

 

Mrs. Kuhlman holds a Masters of Music in Choral Conducting, from Michigan State University. Attending on scholarship and graduating with honors in August 2010, she studied under premier conductors Dr. Sandra Snow, Dr. Jonathan Reed, and Dr. David Rayl.  In fall 2010, Marcia accepted a position as the director of choirs at Grand Junction High School, in Grand Junction, Colorado.  She has cultivated a strong program featuring seven choirs and involving nearly 150 students.  The departments notable accomplishments include marked growth of the program, student acceptance to Regional & National ACDA Honor Choirs, unparalleled All State Choir participation, invitation performances with nationally noted ensembles such as Mo5iac and the Grand Junction Symphony Orchestra, a clinic and commissioned work with composer Eric William Barnum in 2011, performance in 2012 for President Barack Obama’s arrival in Grand Junction, and most recently an invitation to the GJHS Chamber Choir to perform at Avery Fisher Hall, Lincoln Center in New York City under the baton of composers Eric Whitacre and Stephen Schwartz in March 2014.

 

Mrs. Kuhlman enjoys an active professional status regularly attending conferences for the American Choral Director’s Association where she has been selected to run sectionals for State, Regional, and National Honor Choirs and previously served as Western Division Colorado All State Choir Governor from 2012-2015.  She was recently interviewed and published for an article on recording choral ensembles in Choral Director Magazine (Aug/Sept 2014) and was invited to present at the Colorado Music Educators Association Conference pertaining to website design and its application in the music classroom (January 2015).  Marcia has actively pursued emerging choral literature by collaborating with many emerging composers and most notably coordinated a choral clinic and commissioned work titled Wrapped  by internationally known composer Eric William Barnum (2012). During her tenure in Colorado, Mrs. Kuhlman prepared choruses for exemplary local premiers including the symphony chorus for the Grand Junction Symphony Orchestra and presentation of the national anthem for President Barack Obama and nationally with an invitation for her choir to perform at Avery Fisher Hall, Lincoln Center under the direction of composers Eric Whitacre & Stephen Schwartz sponsored by Distinguished Concerts International New York.  Marcia frequently serves as a clinician for private studios, church choirs, and from 2011-2013, she served as musical and artistic director of the Schumann Singers, a semi-professional choral ensemble based in Grand Junction, Colorado.

In August 2015, Mrs. Kuhlman accepted the position of Director of Choral and Vocal Programs at Cowley College in Arkansas City, KS. As a college professor she directed all choral performance ensembles, and instructed music appreciation, applied piano and voice lessons, as well as serving on administrative committees. Returning to Colorado, Mrs. Kuhlman accepted the position of Music Director at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of the Grand Valley (2016) and founded the Mountain View Chamber Choir, serving as the Artistic and Musical Director (501C3) providing a community musical outlet for singers ages 14-24. She is presently serving as the Choir and Drama Director at Roaring Fork High School in Carbondale, Colorado and maintains an active number of applied students in her private studio.

 

Marcia was a competitive dressage horseback rider for over fifteen years and is the recipient of a bronze medal from the United States Dressage Federation.  A passionate traveler, Marcia lived in Germany for a short time and has traveled and performed in several countries including Belgium, France, the Netherlands, Austria, Luxembourg, Italy, Poland, Switzerland, England, Slovakia, and Tunisia.  She enjoys an active lifestyle encompassing many outdoor sports, primarily trail running and hiking with her dogs Jørgen & Zoey and her husband James in the beautiful outdoors of Colorado.

Mrs. Terry Lee, MM

Collaborative Pianist & Accompanist

​

Terry Lee holds Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees in piano performance from the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California.  Since her arrival in Colorado and moving to Aspen in 1980, Ms. Lee has performed in solo recitals, church services and weddings, and has accompanied dance classes, choirs, ensembles, and soloists including cellist Lynn Harrell in a benefit concert for the Wheeler Opera House.  Ms. Lee retired after 19 years as the Director of Development at Colorado Rocky Mountain School where she also co-directed the school's musicals.   She has been the music director for shows at Thunder River Theatre, Sopris Theatre, and for Theatre Aspen School. RFHS has been deeply blessed to have her as our accompanist and arts advocate in our classroom beginning in Fall 2017.​
